VATA Inc.’s 5010 Port “Body in a Box”, is a low cost, compact, lightweight, quick to set up and store training model for the teaching and practice of palpating and accessing IVADs (Implanted Vascular Access Devices). This anatomical healthcare model is supplied with a real port and it’s possible to simulate accessing the following IVAD placements: normal, “tipping”, “wandering”, and deeply placed. Successful access is confirmed by a simulated blood return, as the model has its own 35cc simulated blood reservoir bag neatly tucked inside. Can be accessed in or out of the case. No set-up or put away steps required for patient simulation. Great model to develop hand-eye coordination and gain confidence that easily transfers to patient accessing!

Description

VATA’s 5010 Port “Body in a Box” is a low cost, compact, lightweight, quick to set up and store training model for the teaching and practice of palpating and accessing IVADs (Implanted Vascular Access Devices). This healthcare simulation model is supplied with a real port and it’s possible to simulate accessing the following IVAD placements: normal, “tipping”, “wandering”, and deeply placed. Successful access is confirmed by a simulated blood return, as the model has its own 35cc simulated blood reservoir bag neatly tucked inside it. The two round inserts, used to simulate the “wandering” and “tipping” port, are interchangeable to vary the experience. The tissue flap that is placed over the port has two thicknesses – the 1/4″ side will approximate the feel when palpating a port at an average depth, while the 1/2″ side will approximate the feel when palpating a deeply placed port during simulation. The skin flap is made of VATA Inc.’s new Dermalike II™ material. This material has 63% less needle drag when accessing, improved tear resistance to accept twice the number of needle sticks, no oily/sticky surface, and is stain resistant. The underlying soft tissue block of this model permits the port to “float” when palpating through the skin flap, for a truly realistic experience.

Accessing can be taught and practiced with the tissue pad in the case or removed from the case. This VATA anatomical healthcare model is a great tool for the learning and practicing of palpating and accessing IVAD, competency testing, and skills assessment!

There are several things that you can do to minimize tears: 1. Do not palpate the port using the fingernail. 2. Do not “rock” the needle back and forth to confirm that the needle tip has passed through the septum and is against the base of the port. 3. Do not pull the Outer Tissue Flap back while the needle is in the port’s septum to visually confirm the needle placement. These techniques are not used with patients and should not be used on Chester Chest™. In formulating the material for the flap, we had a choice to either make the flap with a softer and more realistic “tissue-like” feel or unrealistically hard and tending to never “wear out”. The more realistic feel was our choice. The Outer Tissue Flap will wear out over time and is replaceable with 0405/0404 Outer Tissue Flap Replacement.;
