PORT-"BODY IN A BOX"™
Description
What It Is
VATA's Port "Body in a Box"™ (SKU 5010/5011) is a low-cost, compact, latex-free port access training model built for teaching and practicing the palpation and access of IVADs (Implanted Vascular Access Devices). Lightweight and quick to set up or store, it's designed for realistic hands-on repetition without the bulk of a full-body trainer.
How It Works
The model comes with a real port and simulates four common placement scenarios: normal, "tipping," "wandering," and deeply placed. Two interchangeable round inserts recreate the tipping and wandering positions, so learners can practice locating and stabilizing ports that aren't ideally seated. Successful access is confirmed with a simulated blood return, drawn from a 35cc blood reservoir bag tucked inside the model.
The tissue flap covering the port has two thicknesses built in — a 1/4" side that approximates an average-depth port and a 1/2" side that simulates a deeply placed one — so learners can train on both without needing a second unit.
Material & Feel
The skin flap is made from VATA's proprietary Dermalike II™ material, which is completely latex-free and offers:
- A realistic feel and palpation response that closely mimics human tissue
- Tear resistance for a longer product lifespan under repeated needle sticks
- Minimal needle drag for an authentic access experience
The underlying soft tissue block lets the port "float" naturally under the skin flap, so palpation feels true to a real patient rather than a fixed, rigid target. The tissue pad can be practiced on either inside the case or removed, depending on your training setup.
Ideal For
Nursing and oncology infusion programs, PICC/vascular access teams, and any clinical training program teaching IVAD palpation, access technique, competency testing, or skills assessment.
