Description

The VATA Wearable Port IV Trainer is a wearable simulation model designed to enhance port-access training and clinical competency in all learning environments.  Engineered for maximum versatility, the model can be worn by a standardized patient to enhance communication-based scenarios, mounted onto a full-body mannequin for technical skill-building, or utilized directly on a tabletop for rapid demonstrations and independent student practice. This flexibility ensures that educators can transition seamlessly between different learning environments without the need for multiple specialized devices.

By switching between the thinner 6mm and thicker 12mm skin flaps, learners gain hands-on experience navigating the varying tactile resistance and depths found in diverse patient populations. The trainer further challenges clinical judgment by utilizing three specialized inserts designed to simulate standard, tipped, or deep and floating port placements, ensuring students are prepared for difficult access scenarios before they reach the bedside.

The model represents an exceptional value compared to other products on the market, offering high-tier simulation technology at a more accessible price point. Its integrated, self-contained fluid bag allows for a complete "stick-to-flush" workflow, including realistic blood aspiration and catheter maintenance protocols. Built for the high-volume repetition required for mastery, the durable skin flap can withstand 1,800+ accesses using a 20-gauge Huber needle, making it a durable and cost-effective staple for any simulation program.

Key Features:

  • Wearable & Interactive – Ideal for practicing port access while refining patient interaction and bedside manner
  • Multiple Training Scenarios – Includes two different skin thicknesses and three inserts for various realistic training scenarios
  • Durability – Can be accessed 1800+ times (out of the box!) using a 20g huber needle
  • Lifelike Feel & Puncture Resistance – Made with our proprietary Dermalike™ latex-free material for lifelike feel and puncture resistance
  • Flashback Confirmation – Simulated blood flashback ensures proper needle placement, building confidence, hand-eye coordination, and competency
  • Training Versatility – Can be worn by a standardized patient for realistic patient interaction or attach it to a simulation manikin for independent practice
  • Enhanced Safety – Rigid backing to the skin pad prevents accidental needle sticks, protecting your training partner

WEARABLE PORT ACCESS TRAINER™ FAQs

What is the Wearable Port Access Trainer™ used for?

It's a wearable simulation model designed for practicing port (implanted vascular access device) access. It helps learners build clinical competency in needle insertion, blood aspiration, and catheter maintenance while also practicing patient communication and bedside manner.

How can the trainer be used — does it have to be worn?

No. It's designed for maximum versatility: it can be worn by a standardized patient for realistic interaction-based scenarios, mounted onto a full-body manikin for hands-on technical practice, or used flat on a tabletop for quick demos and independent student practice.

What skin and insert options come with the trainer?

It includes two interchangeable skin flap thicknesses (6mm and 12mm) to simulate different patient body types, plus three specialized inserts that replicate standard, tipped, and deep/floating port placements — giving learners exposure to a range of access difficulties.

How durable is the trainer, and what needle should I use?

The skin flap is built for heavy repeated use and can withstand 1,800+ accesses using a 20-gauge Huber needle, making it a cost-effective option for high-volume training programs.

Does the trainer simulate blood flashback?

Yes. It includes a self-contained fluid bag that enables a full "stick-to-flush" workflow, complete with simulated blood flashback to confirm proper needle placement.

What material is the skin made of?

The skin is made from VATA's proprietary Dermalike™ material, which is latex-free and designed to provide a lifelike feel along with puncture resistance.

What skin tone options are available?

The trainer is available in two variants: Darkly Pigmented and Lightly Pigmented.

Is there a safety feature to prevent accidental needle sticks?

Yes. The skin pad has a rigid backing that helps prevent needles from passing through and accidentally sticking the person wearing it or handling the model.

How do I care for and clean the skin?

Clean the soft Demalike skin with alcohol and a non-linting cloth, allowing it to air dry. This should be followed by sprinkling the talc on parts and lightly wiping off the excess.
