Team Spotlight: Andrew’s 20th VATA-versary!

This year marks an exciting milestone for our President, Andrew Call—20 years with VATA! From working alongside Tom in the early days to guiding the company’s growth today, Andrew has been instrumental in shaping the VATA you know and love.

We asked him a few questions to celebrate and of course…we couldn’t resist sharing a few throwback photos. You’re welcome. ;)

You’ve worn a lot of hats over the years—do you remember your first “official” role at VATA? Tell us about those early days…

When I graduated from college, I didn’t originally plan to stay at VATA long-term. My first role was in production, working hands-on with some of our models. I still remember painting the original Seymour model and creating the skin pad for the 365—the early version of what’s now our 2365. After we moved into our current facility in 2007, I began taking on more responsibilities in process improvement and planning, which gave me a broader view of the business and how we could continue to grow and evolve.

Is there a product launch or innovation you’re especially proud of?

Chester has a special place in my memories. When I was about 5 or 6 years old, I remember my dad working on the early designs and prototypes of Chester right in our home. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what he was doing—but looking back nearly 40 years later, it’s incredible to see how far things have come. It’s amazing to think about how many Chester models are now out in the world, and how many healthcare professionals have used one as part of their training. It’s a powerful reminder of how VATA started and the impact we’ve had over the years.

VATA’s culture is pretty special. What’s one thing you think sets the team apart?

Being a smaller company really gives VATA a family-like feel. Everyone knows each other, and there’s always an opportunity to connect—whether it’s passing through the office or walking across the production floor. Over the years, we’ve had many employees come and go, but only a handful have actually retired from VATA. What’s special is that those who have retired still stop by regularly to say hello and catch up with the colleagues they worked alongside for 14 to 30+ years. It’s a testament to the strong relationships and sense of community we’ve built here.

Looking ahead, what traditions or values do you hope will remain unchanged for the next 20 years?

As we continue to grow, I truly hope we never lose the close-knit, family-like atmosphere that makes VATA special. One tradition that really reflects this spirit is our weekly “Treats” Meeting. It began around 1994 as a simple gathering in the break room with a few snacks—and it’s been going strong ever since. What started small has become a 30-year tradition. Each week, a team member brings in a treat—homemade or store-bought—and we take some time to catch up on what’s happening in the business. We also give the floor to a team member for 5–10 minutes to share something personal. Over the years, we’ve seen everything from dance lessons and travel stories to family photos and personal passions. It’s a great way for us to connect and get to know each other beyond our day-to-day work. As we continue to expand, it may become more challenging to maintain traditions like this—but they’re a big part of what defines our culture. We’re committed to finding ways to keep them alive.

On the Road: Spring Trade Show Highlights

From Denver to Orlando, we hit the road this spring to connect with nurses, educators, and simulation pros at some of the top events in the field. We loved sharing our models, learning from you, and celebrating all the ways simulation training is evolving.

Season Highlights:

Show MVPs: Seymour and Wilma stole the spotlight at SAWC and WOCNext, while Chester Chest™ and 2365 were big hits at INS, ONS, and INACSL. And let’s not forget the real star… mini chocolate Seymours. These bite-sized butts were the talk of the SAWC exhibit hall!

From Prototype to Launch: The Wearable Two-Vein IV Access Trainer™—made its debut at INS, ONS, and INACSL, thanks to your feedback on last year’s prototype! We loved seeing the excitement and gathering more ideas for future innovations.

VATA in the Wild: Our simulation models were spotted at other booths too, from Seymour and Wilma to Vinnie, Pat, and even custom builds we’ve created over the years. Got a custom idea of your own? Let’s talk →

Face-to-Face Interaction: One of the best parts? Talking directly with healthcare pros and simulation experts about what’s working—and what’s still needed. Your passion for patient care and training future providers inspires everything we do.

Loyal Fans: So many of you stopped by just to share how much you love your VATA models (and grab a few replacement parts for your trusty Chesters!).

What’s Next?

Catch us at SAWC Fall, September 3–6, 2025, at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas! We’ll have our trusted wound-care models in tow—plus a surprise or two.
